Last week, a member of the Star Reviews team began planning a birthday party for her five year old niece. The question in our office became, where do you go to buy fun party supplies for two dozen kindergarten students? Birthday in a Box is an online party supply store catering primarily to parents and others who need to throw parties for children. The company launched in 1996 and despite its name, Birthday in a Box also provides party supplies for baby showers, holiday parties, and other events as well.

Navigating & Using Birthday in a Box:
Finding what you want is easy on the site. From the main page, you can browse by items or by theme. You can also view a list of the most popular themes or do a search to track down specifically what you are looking for. Available items are displayed in an easy to read chart format. You simply enter the quantities you want as you scroll down the screen, then select “Checkout” when you're finished. The process is straightforward and definitely easier than shopping for party supplies at a brick and mortar shop. Our team loved how bright and ‘party-ish’ the website interface was, as well. It sure put us in a good mood!

To be one of the top party planning sites on the Internet, a company needs plenty of selection. The good news is, Birthday in a Box delivers. With more than 100 themes available including popular characters like Dora the Explorer and Elmo, you'll find plenty to choose from for kids' parties. Now if you want to plan a party for a child older than 12, your selections are much more limited and you may be better off going elsewhere. But, favors and personalized items are up for sale for events like baby showers and spa parties, should you need them.

Birthday in a Box Pricing & Delivery:
To give you an idea of how much Birthday in a Box charges for their party supplies, we've listed a couple of examples below:

High School Musical Party Box for 8 guests (includes plates, cups, napkins, utensils, streamers, balloons, and ribbon) = $24.99
Happy Feet piñata = $22.99
Baby Einstein Mylar balloon = $3.99

Delivery charges are based on the total amount spent. For UPS Ground, costs start at $6.95.

Customer Support:
Birthday in a Box does have a couple of options for customer support. One of the “Customer Help” sections of the site includes very basic information about getting around the site, doing searches, handling returns, etc. A separate FAQs database for shipping is available, but a link is not included in the “Customer Help” section.

The company can be contacted by email, by mail, and by phone. By phone, we were connected to a friendly representative after only a short wait. Our question was answered in a timely and professional manner, which we applaud Birthday in a Box on.

We received a prompt response to our email inquiry in only a few hours. However, we were only directed to a link on the web site and had to dig through the shipping FAQ's ourselves to find a response. The reply could have been a little more helpful, instead of simply referring us back to the website.

Upside:
Fast email response. Great selection of kid’s birthday supplies and themed parties.

Downside:
Prices are a bit higher than others. Not as many favors for ‘non-children’s’ parties.

Summary:
When we compare party planning services, we look for how useful the site is going to be for the average person who wants to host a fabulous get together. Birthday in a Box is definitely helpful for parents who want to get everything they need for a great party in one place for a single price without the hassles of running to numerous stores. Although the prices are a bit higher than the competition's, the selection and the customer support helped it win high marks in our party planning service reviews. If you're looking to throw a themed bash for your kids, this site is PERFECT for you, as they have one of the best children's party selections we've come across!
