It is almost impossible to maintain a normal weight during the fall and winter months. Let’s face it, no one wants to take a 5 mile run when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground and the mercury has plummeted to 10 degrees. Add Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas cookies into the mix, and it is very easy to gain a few pounds, or 10. Here are a few tricks to help keep looking bikini weather thin all year long.
Rake your leaves. This is a tedious chore, but one that must be undertaken. If your lawn is already leaf free, why not offer to help your friends and family clean up their backyards? You could also extend a helping hand to an elderly neighbor by assisting with his or her lawn maintenance. Encourage your kids to get into the act by jumping into your freshly raked piles. It will scatter the leaves everywhere and you will have to start all over again, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!
No one wants to brave the cold weather to hit the gym, but don’t assume that means you have to spend a lot on expensive exercise equipment. Instead of investing money in a treadmill or an elliptical machine, do squats on your kitchen chairs or run laps up and down your stairs. Get creative with your new at home workouts. It takes a lot more energy than you might think to clean out your attic or reorganize your bedroom closet. Lifting those heavy boxes and lugging around totes of Christmas decorations are both great ways to get your heart rate up.
Pay attention to your kids’ activity level this fall and winter. Children trapped in doors can gain unhealthy weight and can become restless and irritable. Last year my daughter was impossible simply because she had a nasty case of cabin fever. There is one simple solution to this problem that can drain your little one’s energy and help get you keep in shape: have a dance party. Turn up the music; the louder and more annoying the better. Clean the furniture out of your living room and have a great time. If anything, you’ll burn a lot of calories by simply laughing them off.

The best way to get rid of unwanted fall and winter fat is to stop it before it begins. I have an unruly sweet tooth and my best tool of avoidance is to host holiday gatherings at my own home. This gives me complete control of the menu. Instead of egg nog, I serve low calorie punch and skim milk. I also never bake Christmas cookies. During the month of December most people I know live in a home that smells like chocolate and pumpkin pie, but not mine. Instead, I serve raw vegetables and lean meats and cheeses. Sure my guests are thrilled by this initially, but most thank me when their pants still fit in January.
