Let’s travel back in time to the year 1983. An era of leg warmers, acid washed jeans, and Billy Idol on the radio. This was also the year The A-Team premiered. I was only six years old at the time, so I unfortunately wasn’t allowed to watch this show. My mom thought it was a little too violent for my juvenile mind. Now that I am grown woman and have watched almost every episode of this awesome show, I don’t really see what her concern was. Yes, many of the episodes dealt with some very adult themes like the Vietnam War, narcotics, and kidnapping; but the show always infused its own quirky sense o f humor into these complex subject. You can imagine my delight when I learned there was to be a big screen version of The A-Team. I am curious to see how this television show will fit into a more modern day setting. There are several elements and characters featured on this program that have to make it into the movie version. Otherwise, in my mind, it just wouldn’t be The A-Team.
The van! The show featured a beat up black and grey GMC Vandura. This iconic motor vehicle has become synonymous with the show’s cult status, and was a crucial element. I’m sure that there will be a more modernized version of this van in the feature film. I am pleading with the makers of this film: Do not eliminate the campy elements of this show, that is what made it so great. The A-Team and its crew of misfits always got the job done, but never took themselves too seriously. I’m guessing that is why they drove around in a large van with a red ascending stripe.
Random celebrity guests. The A-Team was riddled with special guests that popped up from time to time. Film stars, musicians, and athletes such as Joe Montana, Vanna White, Rick James, and Tia Carrere have all left their mark on the show. It won’t be a stretch to imagine this element will not be excluded from the film. Hollywood is a relatively small town, and cameos are a normal occurrence these days. Let’s hope that these special guest stars make some sense to the plot of the film.

The Face. Most fans of the show will tell you their favorite character was Mr. T’s Bosco "B.A." Baracus. Mine was "The Face", otherwise known as Lt. Templeton Peck. Yes, he was sexist, crude, and a womanizer, but he had some of the best one liners featured on the show. This part has been cast, and will be played by “All About Steve” and “The Hangover” actor Bradley Cooper. He seems like a great choice for this part. My only concern is the passage of time. His part was very misogynistic, even for 1983. Women, thankfully, are in 2009 treated with more respect. I can only imagine how this suave, debonair man will fit into a modern day, feminist society.
"The A-Team" is set to open across the country, and at a theater near you, on June 11, 2010. I for one will be in the front row, ready to see all my old favorites, modernized and 20 feet tall.
