The year 2009 was a great year at the box office. Kids, and adults alike, loved Up, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I had a great time with Zombieland, Halloween 2, and Confessions of a Shopaholic. 2010 is fast approaching, and there are going to be a lot of films to choose from. Here is just a sampling of some of the most anticipated films that are slated to be released next year.
Ironman 2. I am a huge fan of the first Ironman. Robert Downey Jr. will be back to play the womanizing billionaire Tony Stark, aka Ironman. This time around we’ll finally get a chance to see War Machine, and for those of you familiar with the comics, this is a very good thing. The villain is Russian evil doer Whiplash, who is being played by the comeback kid of the moment, Mickey Rourke. My only apprehension lies with the casting of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. I am not the actresses’ biggest fan and think that Emily Blunt was definitely a better choice, but we’ll all just have to wait and see her performance. In any event Ironman’s second, and hopefully not last, installment is set to be released on May 7, 2010.
The Last Airbender. For those of you unacquainted with the Avatar series just ask your kids about Aang and they will have you captivated for hours. Aang is the last airbender, a 12 year old boy who is capable of bending, or controlling, the four elements. M. Night Shyamalan is in the director’s chair and let’s all hope that this film is better than the last few gems he’s been responsible for. Don’t even get me started on the subject of "The Happening". Check out the internet for the trailer to this film, which is being released on July 2, 2010. In the mean time the Avatar cartoon series airs almost daily on Nickelodeon. You’re children will be impressed at your vast knowledge on water bending.

Alice in Wonderland. The internet has been buzzing ever since pictures for this film were released and Johnny Depp surprised the geek masses at this year’s Comic Con. The Tim Burton telling of Lewis Carroll’s original masterpiece takes place when Alice is 17 years old. She is being played by Mia Wasikowa, who only other credits include the 2008 film Defiance, but that really isn’t of any great importance. Everyone is of course waiting to see Johnny Depp’s unique interpretation of The Mad Hatter. A picture is truly worth a thousand words, and if those publicity stills are once again any kind of indication, I’m sure that Depp will once again not disappoint. Watch for this at your local theater on May 5th. Prepare to carbo load, because remember that is the same week that Ironman 2 is slated to be released.
Other notable releases include Sherlock Holmes, Tron Legacy, The Wolfman (with Anthony Hopkins, the greatest living actor by far), and Toy Story 3. A remake of the 1981 classic Clash of the Titans will also be airing sometime next year and you’ll have to fight me for the spot at the front of the line for this movie!
