Fable 3’s teaser trailer begins with an insightful voice softly explaining the setting of the new game. "The Kingdom of Albion is changing," the voice-over says in a declaratory tone, "The land needs a ruler." As she says this, the camera pans to the right and zooms out, showing the details of a crown in the middle of a forest.
The relevance of this crown and Albion’s lack of a leader will be the main premise of the gameplay in Fable 3, as Peter Molyneux explains it. When standing up on stage, Molyneux said "You are going to become the ruler of the whole of Albion." He went on to tell that the sequel would have players controlling the son or daughter of their character from Fable 2. Though this is a big plus for owners of Fable 2, people jumping into the series with Fable 3 might be at a bit of loss, as Molyneux never explains how the game will handle players without a previously made character.
What is definitely confirmed, though, is that the world of Fable 3 will be drastically different from that of the original and second Fable. All throughout the land, players will experience the impact of a kingdom entering an industrial revolution. During this key moment in Albion’s history, the player will overthrow the king of the land in a fashion much like politics of today. "Like politicians in the real world, you’re going to have to promise everything," Molyneux said when describing the campaign to become the king or queen, "You know, I look at Obama and he looks a bit haggard now. It looks like the truth has been revealed to him."
Molyneux also describes new game mechanics that will be introduced in Fable 3, such as the Judgment mechanic. Throughout the game, players will be confronted with situations in which they’ll have to judge other characters, or make important decisions. Molyneux listed judgment situations as ranging from deciding whether or not to incite war to deciding the fate of a thief.
"The other new mechanic that we’ve got is called ‘touch,’” said Molyneux. Touch, he explained, will be like an improved version of the expressions system in Fable 2. He then said that he would only tease with how the game would implement the ‘touch’ feature, but said that it was only a small part of what they’re doing to make Fable 3 bigger.
Fable 3 is intended to be released some time late in 2010.
