Advice for First Time Apartment Renters
It's time to move out on your own and find your first apartment. Renting an apartment can be a big undertaking and it does involve research and some real thought into where you will call home for the next several months. No one likes to have to move from apartment to apartment every few months, so it's important that you really take finding your first apartment and moving in seriously.
The biggest thing that you have to do when renting your first apartment is set a budget. You need to figure out how much income you have coming in and what your other bills are to figure out how much you can afford on your rent. Don't forget to add in utility costs if they are not included in the rental agreement as well as other things like food, gas for your vehicle or transportation money, and entertainment expenses. You never want to rent an apartment that is over your budget as you will only end up in debt or you may just get kicked out and have no place to stay. It's always wise to overestimate your expenses rather than underestimate and find yourself in trouble.
Never sign a rental agreement before you read the entire thing over or have a parent or other family member read it over. You should always know what the cost of your rent includes, such as some apartments will include some utilities like gas and water in the bill while other apartments may not. You also need to be aware of the length of the lease and how many days you need to give notice if you decide to move. You don't want to end up paying rent at a place you don't live at anymore because you didn't know you had to live there for 6 months.

Know that even as a first time apartment renter you can still have the option to be picky about where you live. As I mentioned, you don't want to be moving every few months because you don't like where you live. If you are looking for an apartment complex with certain amenities such as a swimming pool or health club, then find complexes that fit your requirements and see if they are in your budget. You can be picky to a certain degree but you should not go over your budget just so you can have a swimming pool where you live.
Lastly, once you have found your first apartment and you are settled in, be sure that you act like the adult you are and get to know some of your neighbors. Don’t be the person in the apartment building that no one likes or that everyone tries to get kicked out. Be courteous and respectful to others. If you are having people over or playing music, keep it at a reasonable level so that you don't disrupt your neighbors. Also, by getting to know your neighbors you can have another set of eyes watching out for you and just a friendly face to talk to if you get lonely in your new apartment.
Renting your first apartment is a big step in adulthood. You need to make sure that you do the research and plan accordingly so that you can enjoy your first apartment and the freedom that comes along with it.
