When most people think about making money online they don’t think about running their own message board or forum website. It is possible to make money with message boards and forums and there are several ways that you can go about doing it.
The first way that you can make money with a forum is by simply adding a pay per click advertising section such as Google Adsense. There are plugins that you can add to your forum site that will display ads on the sides, top, and bottom of the website and every time a person clicks on one of those ads, you make money from it. If you are not sure how to do this, you can have a web designer make the forum for you and then have then add Google Adsense to the website for you.
Another way that you can make money with message boards is to use affiliate links on your website. This means that you may have an advertising banner at the top of your forum that is actually an affiliate link that will make you money. The important thing to remember is that the affiliate product should coincide with the theme of the forum. For example, if you have a parenting forum, you are not going to put an affiliate link to a dog training book. Instead you could put a link to a parenting book or tool, a money saving tool or to another parenting website.
The more traffic that you are able to attract to your forum the more options that you have for making money with mesage boards. Once your website starts getting several hundred visitors a day you might start to consider selling advertisement spaces on your forum. Instead of just running Adsense advertisements on your forum, you could sell those spaces to individual advertisers. The thing that you have to remember is that you may have to solicit people to buy these advertising spaces in the beginning so that may take some marketing work to get people to buy. Be sure that you sell these spaces at a price were you can make more money than if you just kept Adsense or Yahoo ads on the forum. The larger the advertisement space, the more money you need to charge.

If your forum or message board site becomes really popular and you have thousands of people frequenting the boards every day, you can consider charging a membership to the forum. You can charge the fee to access the whole forum or you can charge a fee to access certain parts of the forum and advertise them as a “Member’s Only” area. For example if you have an Internet marketing forum and you attract some pretty big names in Internet marketing or you are able to hire these people to write on your forum, then you may want to make a special members only area that people have to access to get this special information. It could be a very small fee like $5 a month or if your forum has grown that well you can charge up to $30 a month. Realize that when you start charging people to participate in your forum, you may end up losing people who can’t afford the price or who just don’t want to pay for it.
Remember that the whole key to making money online with a forum or message board is to attract visitors who want to participate in the conversations. You are going to have to play an active role in getting the forum started and promoting it and keeping up the conversations. If you are not up to the job, you can also outsource it and hire someone to do this for you. Although it may be slow-going at first, it is definitely possible to make a nice sum of money with an online forum of your own.
