More and more people are looking to earn extra income while digging themselves out of this recession. With job layoffs, hours cut and credit tightening, people are feeling it in their wallets. Perhaps even more significant is the renewed interest in savings. If it didn't happen to them, they have seen a friend or family member lose their job, and know that they could be next. Now, they are starting to save more for "that rainy day". Here are some ideas to help you earn extra money to build up your savings.
Sell stuff. This is perhaps the easiest and most logical things to do. Most of us have clutter; we have tons of items that we don't use and haven't used in a year, if not years. Perhaps, you have baby furniture or baby clothes that you no longer need. When in a recession, people tend to try to save money and purchase things more frequently at garage sales, flea markets and through of classified ads, rather than pay full money at a retail store. Take advantage of this and get your unwanted things out there. Although eBay charges a fee, many places do not. You can try placing ads in your local penny saver. On the other hand, Craigslist is a great, free way to advertise items for sale. What is great about Craigslist is you can add pictures to your item descriptions, which goes a long way in helping to sell an item. Make crafts. If you are the creative, handy type, then making crafts may be the thing for you. If you are a scrapbooker, consider selling scrapbooks or scrapbooking services on sites like Etsy. There is even a market for hand-made greeting cards. Candles and soaps are also big sellers. Consider tutoring. If you still work full time, you could tutor in the evenings or the weekend to earn extra income. Tutoring positions are available at local tutoring centers, universities or online through sites like Brainfuse and Tutor.com. Teaching English as a second language (ESL) has become a popular side (or even full time job), so that is worth looking into.

There are many blog platforms that are free. Rent a room. Renting a room in your house is another way to bring in a nice extra sum of cash each month. If you live in or near a college town, it is often easier to find a person to rent a room in your house. Often the price you set to rent your room will be less than the student would have to pay at a dorm or apartment. Pet Sitting/Pet Walker. This industry has been growing in recent years. The nice thing about this one is you can watch several dogs at one time, getting an income stream from each dog owner.
